Agriculture
Zeeland was an agricultural province in origin and it still is. The Zeeland landscape cannot be imagined without pastures, fields, cows, sheep, tractors and farms. Despite the EU support, farmers have a hard living. Many are forced to generate extra income by running mini-campsites on their land. In 2002 almost 4,000 companies were active in agriculture, cultivating approximately 123,000 hectares of Zeeland soil. Some 20,000 people are employed in this primary sector, which includes fishermen. More than half of all agricultural companies are located in Zuid-Beveland or Zeeuwsch-Vlaanderen. Potatoes, wheat and beet are popular, but barley, peas, beans and unions are cultivated as well. Horticulture is also present in Zeeland.
