Blijdorp Zoo, Rotterdam
The history of this zoo goes as far back as 1856 when two employees of the local railway company rented an area of ground to accommodate rare birds. This little garden developed slowly but surely into a real zoo. In 1937, the municipality of Rotterdam agreed to close the zoo which was currently situated in the middle of the city, and set up a new zoo in the polder of Blijdorp. It just so happened that the old zoo was heavilly bombarded during the Second World War, which meant the animals had to be transported quickly to the new zoo which was still under construction. At the end of 1940, the new zoo was opened. Since 1988, the workers of the zoo have been busy creating a large and natural environment for the animals. The zoo is divided in continents containing plants unique to those areas. Animals can therefore be admired in their natural habitat.
