Economy

The largest employment sector in Zeeland used to be agricultural. This changed in the sixties and seventies of the 20th century. More and more people found employment in the Flushing harbour and industry. Where half of all workers worked in agriculture at the beginning of the 20th century, in the seventies the same amount was employed in industry. In 2004 the majority of people were employed in the service sector (i.e. schools, banks, health care and so forth). On January 1st 2003 Zeeland had 11,500 people unemployed, which was below the national average.

The mobility within Zeeland was improved thanks to the Deltaworks and the Westerscheldetunnel. Although the tunnel indicated the sentimental end of the ferries, it reduced travel times by 50 percent. The Zeelandbrug (the bridge across the Oosterschelde) and the Zandkreekdam (near Kats) improved the rate of traffic flow from Goes to Rotterdam. One of the advantages of the improved infrastructure was the ability for Zeeland people to be employed in adjacent provinces and vice versa. 20,000 people from Zeeland leave to work in the provinces of Noord-Brabant and Zuid-Holland every day, but only 8,000 people from these provinces go to work in Zeeland. Many young people leave Zeeland after secondary school to study elsewhere. The only possibilities for higher education with Zeeland are the Hogeschool Zeeland and the newly founded Roosevelt Academy. The departure of this many young people explains to large extent the relatively high number of elderly people living in the province.
