Haringvliet Expo

In 1970 the Haringvliet was cut off from the North Sea by the construction of the Haringvliet locks. This has changed many things in the delta of the rivers Rhine and Meuse. The Haringvliet changed from a brackish estuary with tides into a fresh arm of a river without tides. The fresh Haringvliet is a good source of water for agriculture and drinking. The shipping traffic also benefits from the higher water level. Nature was changed though after the closing-off.

Through unique photographs, outline maps, scale-models and original film footage you will get an impression for the construction and functioning of the locks in the Haringvliet exposition. These locks can safely be called the biggest water taps of Holland!
Furthermore an image is sketched of the ‘Kier’. This is the decision taken in the year 2000 to open up the Haringvliet locks throughout nearly the entire year, so types of fishes like salmon, sea trout and eel are free to swim into the Haringvliet. With this, a gradual change between the fresh and salt water arises, which affects nature in the Haringvliet in a positive way. Only at storm tide and low water in the rivers will the locks closed completely. During a visit you have the opportunity to visit the subterranean constructions and one of the enormous engine rooms so you can get an impression of the magnitude of the complex.
