Kinderdijk
The windmills of Kinderdijk attract tourists from all over the world. The site of 19 windmills was placed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997.
Since the 17th century it became more and more difficult to drain the swampy area in the Western part of Alblaserwaard. First, channels were dug to dry the area of the ‘Grote Waard’, and later, in the period of 1738-1740, windmills were built to pump out the redundant water from the polder, through these channels, to the river Lek. Although modern inventions today take over the windmill's functions, they remain a unique sight of the Dutch landscape. The gentle sweeping landscape of Kinderdijk offers a special sight for many tourists. There is a visitor’s windmill where tourists can take a look inside a fully working windmill, preserved in its original form. The miller, who operates the windmill, will answer any questions visitors may have. It is also possible to take a canal trip (lasting approximately half an hour) along the line of windmills.

How to get there
Kinderdijk is situated in Ablasserwaard, about 10 km from the city centre of Rotterdam. From Rotterdam, Kinderdijk is accessible by car, bike, public transport, and even by boat.
By car: Take the A15 motorway and come off at exit 22 (Ablasserwaard, Kinderdijk). Subsequently, follow the signs ‘Kinderdijk’ and the signs with windmills. The distance between the exit and the windmill park is about 5.5 km.
Bikers can choose from several spectacular cycle tracks. One very popular route is from Rotterdam, through Ridderkerk and across the Ridderkerk- Kinderdijk by ferry. The mill park is visible from the ferry.
Lastly, Kinderdijk is also accessible by boat. There are several ways to approach the windmill park by boat from Rotterdam and Dordrecht. One advantage of this method of transportation is the fact that you arrive to the pleasant sight of the waterways, which played such an important role in the history of the windmills. Waterways, dikes and windmills are the traditional method of protection against the water.
