The Maeslant Barrier
In the Hoek van Holland lies the final piece of the Deltaworks: the Maeslant Barrier. Two enormous gates shut off the New Waterway in the event of a storm tide. Through doing this South-Holland is protected against high waters. This storm surge barrier is almost as long as the Eiffel Tower and weighs four times as much.
There is an exposition of the Maeslant Barrier in the Keringhuis. Admission is free and it is accessible by everyone. It doesn’t matter whether you know a lot or just a little about the technologies involved. The Keringhuis provides a fine view of the huge structure and you can watch large ships pass through it once every six minutes on average. Guided tours are possible in the weekend although reservation is required. Guided group tours of around one hour and thirty minutes can also be booked and are available in Dutch, English or German. These tours also include the site of the storm surge barrier outside the Keringhuis.
