Maritime Museum of Rotterdam
The Maritime Museum of Rotterdam contains an important collection, of which many items date back to 1852. It was this year when Prince Hendrik (1820-1879) insisted on the furnishing of the model room of the Royal Dutch Yacht Club. This model room, only accessible by club members, grew into a public municipal museum, - the Maritime Museum of Rotterdam. It officially opened in 1874. With this opening date, the museum is the oldest maritime museum of the Netherlands.
The collection of the museum consisted in 1874 of about 300 items: ship models, technical models, a small library of prints, drawings and cards. Since 1998, the number of maritime objects in the collection has grown to half a million, divided into categories like ship models, paintings, prints, drawings, nautical charts and globes, ship plans, photos, films, videos, navigation instruments, nautical instruments, ship furniture and other numerous personal objects, such as documents and clothes.
