Ports
It is no coincidence that many large and important cities are situated on a coast or river. Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, New York, Sjaghai and Singapore are all situated on the boundary of land and water. The founders of these cities knew that the presence of water could be advantageous for the development of a city and its inhabitants. Small fishing villages developed into large ports and trading towns. The Netherlands has one important port: Rotterdam. In the top 20 international ports, Rotterdam has ranked highly for a long time.
