The city of Rotterdam and the adjacent area of Rijnmond accommodate one of the largest ports in the world. From the Euromast, one can have a bird’s eye view over the vast dock area. It is possible to take a boat tour through the harbour area and the petrochemical industries. During the last couple of decades, the port has been moving westwards, towards the North Sea. Two times, large quantities of sand have been built up in order to create new space for the port. Unfortunately, old fishing villages, such as Maassluis, Schiedam and Vlaaderingen could not escape the Rotterdam’s need for expansion. Nature has not benefited from these developments, but trade, culture, arts, tourism and recreation have done.
